The Training Centre

  • is so large that it comprises all of the key departments,
  • is so small that it can provide individual assistance with learning processes,
  • designs the course of training in close cooperation between teachers and practical instructors,
  • promotes the formation of the personality and social learning,
  • places the emphasis on dedication and independent action.

The course of training is shaped by

  • a block system, i.e., theoretical and practical phases alternate at intervals of several weeks,
  • a system of course directors, i.e. a specific teacher is the responsible point of contact for the students in a particular course,
  • a varied teaching/learning methodology combining theoretical and practical content:
    • interactive instruction, group work, exercises
    • case study, project
    • role-playing and simulations, staged exercises
    • seminar, workshop among other things
  • a diverse selection of teachers:
    • teachers of nursing professions and nursing educators
    • central and local practical instructors
    • specialist nurses
    • doctors
    • psychologists and others
  • a systematic approach to the state examination

Who we are / Our identity

At the Training Centre for Städtische Krankenhaus Pirmasens gGmbH, we are specially dedicated to providing education, in-service and advanced training to the nursing staff of the entity that runs our hospital. In principle, the Training Centre is covered by the company-wide guideline published at The Training Centre constitutes a separate area, however, so that a further guideline has been established for this purpose. These guidelines are updated as required on an ongoing basis, in close coordination with the Management Board of the Hospital and the Director of the Training Centre. In keeping with the Plan for Training Facilities of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, each year we provide training to 72 public health nurses and patient nurses in three courses and to 22 nurse’s aides in one course. We also assist with the adaptation courses offered each year to around 30 nurses from non-EU countries who are integrated in our facility. Depending on hospital requirements, we offer in-service and advanced training for practical instructors. We consider ourselves to be small enough to be able to offer training on an individual basis, and yet large enough to cover all of the acute inpatient fields which are relevant for the training.

Our goal is to train nursing staff who are competent in their work and who can provide comprehensive and responsible nursing to the regional population in a constantly changing future. We are committed to ensuring there are enough skilled specialists working in our hospital and throughout the region.

Our self-conception in nursing

We are a healthcare profession with statutory tasks specific to nursing staff. These statutory tasks include identifying the level of need for nursing; organising, designing and managing the nursing process; and analysing, evaluating, securing and developing the quality of care provided. We are committed to the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses and the Rules of Professional Practice of the State Chamber of Nurses of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Our educational approach

With an eye to the future, our nursing instruction is based on an action-theoretical and subject-oriented approach and promotes the development of a comprehensive capacity to act. In pleasant atmosphere that is conducive to learning, our trainees and participants work in an increasingly self-directed manner on their professional and personal development. Our trainees and participants learn situationally. This approach takes all age groups into account, along with different nursing and life situations, in different institutional care contexts ranging from health promotion to prevention, from treatment and rehabilitation to palliative therapy.
We use a variety of teaching methods to achieve this objective.

Our cooperative method

We teachers and practical instructors also view ourselves as learners. We take an interest in our own further development within a framework of lifelong learning. We foster an appreciative and collegial approach in our day-to-day interactions with one another. This is true not only of the school team but of our trainees and participants as well.
We tap the synergies of different competencies and skills and orient our efforts around the success of our undertakings. This is how we continuously improve our quality. Above and beyond the school level, we maintain productive partnerships with external lecturers, with cooperation partners for practical training and their practical instructors, with regional educational institutions and with the German Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit). As we are well-networked with these cooperation partners, we can offer our trainees and participants extensive opportunities to develop individual interests and acquire skills for their further professional development across all levels of care.

We perceive our trainees and participants as individuals who have already acquired many competencies and now seek further development.
In an appreciative and humanistic spirit, they strive to find solutions, are open to criticism and can work as part of a team. As they enter the nursing profession, we foster and challenge our trainees and participants and encourage them to assess and reflect on their opportunities and skills in the effort to create prospects for their professional careers. Our philosophy is reflected in the hospital’s corporate guidelines that are presented by the Director of Nursing during instruction at the beginning of training. It is made transparent through the Intranet and the Internet, presented in the various training courses and exemplified in the everyday life of our Training Centre.

Course contents:

2,100 hours of theoretical instruction

  • Theoretical instruction is divided into 11 curricular units based on the curricular framework.

2,500 hours of practical instruction

  • Practical training is provided in the various departments of the hospital as well as in the outpatient and long-term inpatient facilities of our cooperation partners.
  • Deployments of trainees are supervised by pedagogically qualified practical instructors.

The Healthcare and Nursing School at the Municipal Hospital of Pirmasens is certified under the German Accreditation and Approval Ordinance on Work Promotion (AZAV) zertifiziert.

  • The entrance to the Training Centre is located on the back of the building, with access via the parking lot (Roland-Betsch-Straße) or from the car park (Fröhnstraße).
